Embracing the Unconventional Life

I have always been a restless individual.
Ever since I was a small child, I would dart from one activity to the next, from book, to paints, to den building, to climbing frame and back to book, with a sense of urgency and energy, always looking for the next adventure.
I grew up with an endless thirst for creativity, picking up art projects, musical instruments, dance classes and ideas in a never-ending whirlwind to satisfy something, a hunger, a need to to fulfill a burning desire to create, to vent this mad passion for life in any way, shape or form that I could get my hands on.

A deep craving to experience absolutely everything this world has to offer, simultaneously, madly, wildly. An endless itinerary of needs, wants and desires, settling on each like a butterfly on a flower, flitting wings  ready to move with wild abandon to the next beautiful blossom that life had to offer

Twelve months ago, I left the comfortable confines of the UK to embark on the biggest journey of my life. I booked a one way ticket, packed my bags, and with an almost unbearable sense of excitement, jumped on the plane, with no plans, no agenda and no regrets.
My lifetime of darting, jumping, starting, finishing, stopping and dropping had led me to leave my old life behind and embark on a journey of self-discovery and adventure.

I have always been happiest when I am outside of routine, escaped from structure, ignorant to the daily cycles of wake-work-sleep which so many feel trapped within.
I was now living more freely and as impulsively than ever before and it made my soul sing and my heart leap. Where was I going? What was I going to do? Who knows? Who cares? I am the master of my universe now!
The more I succumbed to the ebb and flow of life, the more I came to understand my purpose on this journey and embrace each new experience with a sense of awe and wonder at how synchronistic life could be when you opened your heart and soul to its magic.
Society has taught us to stay, to settle, to stop our hungry hearts from yearning for freedom. We are dragged through a repeated and recycled life of education-marriage-settle.
But what if you are filled with a burning and bursting longing for more? What if your heart screams at you to move, to create, to write, to paint, to sing, to travel, to live? My heart has been screaming all my life — I want more!



My restlessness is, and always has been, my soul’s way of expressing this. I did not know it back then as a child but I was always destined for the unusual and the unconventional, and it is only now that I am coming to fully embrace my restless ways, my flitting and my fleeing, my search for meaning, my search for more…

I may not lead the most conventional of lives, I may not know what is round the corner — which can be scary, but I am trying to live my life as honestly and passionately as possible, even if that means sacrificing security. I am on my own weird and wonderful journey, and for me, the magic is in the mystery.

Change is a Revolution: Trust and Embrace it

Change.

Those six little letters that hold so much weight.
How many times have you heard someone say “I don’t like change”? How many times have you been thrown into unwitting chaos because you lost a job or got your heart broken, or were forced to make changes to your life beyond your control? We think of change as frightening, unwelcome and uncomfortable.
Change is a natural occurrence in order to move forward and progress. The seasons change, our bodies change, the winds change, every cell in our body is in a constant process of change. Without the changing of attitudes, laws and technologies over the years we would never have developed as a planet. We would be stuck living in the dark ages; The human race would become obsolete.
Instead, change represents evolution and movement  – the capacity to push things forward for our own benefit and for the benefit of the planet. The only way we advance is through change, it is the elixir of the existence of humanity.
If something sticks, it becomes stale – an attitude, a career, a daily routine, a habit, a relationship. Change shakes things up and breathes new life into that which otherwise becomes unhealthy or destructive.
Change means regeneration, rejuvenation, reinvention and revolution. Change throws out the old and welcomes in the new with open arms and an open heart. We change our minds, we change our underwear, so why are we so hesitant to make more significant changes in our lives?
Simply put, we like safety and comfort. We, as humans, are ultimately pleasure seekers who like to choose the path of least resistance because the alternative requires an element of effort. It requires facing the fear of the unknown and stepping outside of our comfort zone which can be scary.
But more than anything, it requires us to face our potential, to go within and explore the possibilities of our greatness. And this is going within to places we’d rather avoid, for fear of the realisation that we could be so much more than what we currently believe.
We have evolved to avoid situations that confront us and force us to face our fears. One of our greatest fears is usually failure, therefore we stay safe behind the veneer of our risk-free lives. We don’t like to go against the grain for fear of being ridiculed by a society that tries it’s best to encourage conformity and routine.

Change is considered dangerous because it suggests freedom and choice – and this requires responsibility over your actions and your life. We live in cycles of monotony and we’re afraid to break free because when you break free, you’re on your own.
There is less stability in releasing yourself from safety, but in doing so you open yourself up to a world of opportunities and possibilities. Life becomes an adventure. Dreams are set into motion as you forge your own unique path in the world. You make your own rules.
Change is the greatest personal revolution you can choose. Change releases you from your day to day shackles. Change sets you free. Change is creativity and adventure. Change is glorious mystery.

Admittedly, change can be frightening. To leave behind the safety and familiarity of the life you know can be a daunting prospect, but I promise you this;  it is not nearly as scary as you imagine. The fear of change and the unknown is 100% always just that, a fear.
Fears are like shadows projected on the wall – they look huge and menacing but when you find the source of the shadow, you realise it’s an illusion. The projection of our fears, like the menacing shadows, are distorted truths. They paralyze us and hold us back, preventing us from moving forward in our lives instead of entering into the process of change and coming out the other side, alive and pulsing with the energy of a life truly being lived.
Life is short and if you don’t make that change now, then when? With each new year must come productive change, to help make a positive impact on the world and to better align yourself with our highest purpose. We need commitment and we need passion but above all, the world needs our courage and bravery to make those changes happen.

No one can make those changes for you. You are the director of the movie that is your life and you are responsible for your choices. Making choices based on fear will hold you back and create pain. But making life choices based on love, hope and faith will enable you to create the life you have always imagined.
Change should be welcomed with open arms. Change is where the magic lies. Change is where the moments occur that blow your mind and open your heart to the endless possibilities and potential that is available to each and every one of us.
Make choices based on love and inspired by passion, which enrich your heart and soul. Don’t let fear hold you back and risk settling for less than you deserve. Trust in the calling of the divine and know that change is the catalyst for freedom; and freedom is the greatest gift we have.

5 Signs You're a Dreamer...

Oh, beautiful dreamer… your head is in the clouds again. Come down here where I can see you. What were you dreaming of this time?
Sunkissed meadows framed by azure blue skies… Hazy days spent lounging by trickling streams that meander through sleepy fields… Crimson and burnt ochre sunsets lighting up channels of diamonds over dappled oceans… Flocks of wild birds darting over snow capped mountain tops and lush emerald valleys… Mystical lands filled with the promise of love  and passion, the sweet aroma of incense and jasmine hanging thick in the hot summer air… Wild horses carrying on their backs princes and thieves ready to whisk you off to faraway lands to feast with kings and run with the wolves.
What do you dream of, dreamer?
I dream of people I’ve never met, and cities I’ve never been… I dream of fairies and folk tales and stories I’ve not yet written or read. I dream of what I might one day create and how I might go about creating it. I dream of success and love and heartbreak and heartbuild. I dream of heaven on earth and happiness. I dream of simple pleasures — the sun on my face, sand beneath my feet, the sound of a waterfall,  a breeze, a flower, a promise…
I dream… I dream… I dream…
I imagine feelings not yet felt, and places not yet discovered. I conjure up ideas and fantasies based on the colour of a rose, or the sound of a piano chord. I am an endless river of ecstatic imagining and whimsical wondering.
I dream because to dream is to hope and to have hope is to survive in a world that so fiercely tries to rob you of such luxury.

 As children we are all dreamers. Our imaginations are ripe and wild; we can spend hours, days, even whole summers outside  making dens and castles or imagining monsters and princes and unicorns with magic powers which take us to fantasia and back before tea time. We have invisible friends who we believe to be real and we are convinced our toys come to life every night.
We believe in a magical man with a penchant for sherry and the preferred transport of 12 reindeers, who delivers us gifts every Christmas, missing not one child on the whole planet. We hide our baby teeth eagerly under our pillows, waiting for a generous fairy to visit.
How awesome to live in this way? How wonderful to believe the world holds so much magic and promise…  So why do we stop? We’re told  it’s impractical to keep looking at life in this way and that we need to stop believing in ‘nonsense.’ After all, people will think we’re crazy

But some  never give up imagining this world. Some continue to see magic in the mundane, extrarordinary in the everyday. We call them dreamers. They bring creativity and magic and excitement to the concrete and the routine. They make things happen because they still believe they can.
They dare to dream, and they dare to dream big. It’s within these dreams that change can arise, like the phoenix from the ashes. They see beauty everywhere and they create art from the earth. They tell stories and weave tales to help and heal and inspire.

So here are 5 signs that you are most probably a dreamer, in which case, go forth and spread your magic in the world to help make it a better place:
1. You love to read.
Fact, fiction, poetry, you’re ravenous for words and stories. You drink in their wisdom and lose yourself within their pages. Your imagination conjures up wild mental images which inspire and excite you, and you often fall in love with the characters from your books.
You re-read the novels that capture your imagination,  picking them up like old friends. It makes you delightfully happy to be curled up with a good book, a cup of tea and a long, lazy evening ahead.
2. You still believe in magic.
Even though we’re conditioned to stop believing in magic around our teens, you secretly still do. You believe in unicorns and fairies and wizards and witches and you most definitely believe that there is a realm of magical wonder that exists alongside our ordinary existence because you’ve witnessed the innocence of a child, the sixth sense of an animal or the kindness of strangers.
You’ve known the electrifying pull towards the mysterious and you know that magical powers exist in yourself and in all the other magical people. You know because you feel it. And feeling is believing, dreamer.
3. You’re creative.
You love to paint or draw or write or sing or play an instrument. You might not be the best, you might not even think you’re very good but you just love to use your creative energy towards doing something that makes you happy. You feel an urge to sit down and draw the sunset with coloured crayons, or a poem flies out onto a scrap of paper without warning after hearing an old favourite song.
You love to let go and let the creative juices flow because you lose yourself and you  feel really good when you do. Creativity isa life force that flows through each one of us and harnessing it means to access our highest energy; the place where beauty and magic resides.
4. You love to be immersed in nature.
Fields, mountains, rivers and oceans. These are the places whereyour soul comes alive and you feel a peace in your heart. You feel the pull towards places which offer you this solace and you feel connected with the gentleness of nature.
You are energized by the forest, and the quiet calm of the countryside and you feel the need to escape to nature every so often to re-charge. A lack of green spaces can play havoc  with your general disposition — and you often find yourself longing for the silent sweetness of nature.
5. You love to be alone.
Spending time alone, recharges your batteries and gives you a chance to connect to yourself again. You love the company of others but you need to escape into your own space often as it’s there where you can really dream and create and contemplate and just be.
Listen to music, read a book, think, relax, unwind and unravel the stresses and strains of life, in your own time, and in your own space. To ‘just be’ in your own company is one of the surest sign of being a dreamer. You can never feel alone or bored when you’re truly at ease with yourself and your imagination.

So, dreamer, we’ve been waiting for you… We need you to promise to keep dreaming to inspire us to be better and bolder and more brilliant.
Show us faraway lands with your words and your hands and your heart and paint our futures with the spectrum of rainbows. Be bold enough to alchemize your dreams into reality and  live bravely in your heartspace to inspire others to do the same.

2014; New Years Intentions



New year, new start. I love the possibilities and optimism you can feel at the beginning of a new year. This year instead of resolving make changes, I will set Intentions in order to manifest the best year of my life to date.

Resolutions usually fail, within a month, because you decide to make radical changes to your life with immediate effect and these are often unrealistic. To set intentions is a simpler and more realistic way to start the new year because you are being gentle on yourself, therefore you already believe that you can achieve it.  You are simply saying; this is what I intend to implement//manifest this year in my life.You are not setting yourself harsh restrictions or over ambitious goals, you are saying to the universe "This is what I want; please help it happen".


 Intentions carry a forcefield of energy around them because you set the universal ball of 'law of attraction' into motion when you focus your thoughts and energy on bringing something into your life. The more focus and intention you place on what you want, the more emotion you can involve in its imagining, the more likely it is to manifest. When you focus the energy of gratitude and love onto something, the universe conspires to bring it into existence because they are two mighty powerful emotions... and throw in some awesome visualisation; how will it feel, look like, taste like, sound like....and you got yourself a sweet deal with the divine.



How to set your 2014 Intentions:


WRITE IT DOWN

 anything and everything you wish you bring forth this year, just write it down "I will start a blog" or " I will master that yoga headstand". Writing intentions down, physically, on paper, grasps the ideas out of the ether and puts them into your sphere of manifestation.. It also allows you to keep a track on where you're going and what you want to check off over the coming 12 months. The very act of writing down what you desire has a magical affect of brining it into existence. It's like setting an alarm and then your body waking up 2 minutes before, or writing a shopping list and somehow just not having to check it as you go. writing makes things exist in front of our eyes, our minds start to believe we have it and hey presto, youre on your way to galvanising your dreams.


BELIEVE IN IT/YOURSELF 

There's no point in your intention being "I will become an astronaut" unless you really, truly believe that this will or can happen. By all means dream BIG and set yourself lofty goals but make sure they are in the realms of reality in so much that you truly believe down to your core, that it can happen. We human beings are capable of achieving a whole lot, even things we didnt think we could.. so chase that dream, but make sure it resonates with your inner belief system, and your heart and soul gives it the OK.


MEDITATE ON IT

There's some confusion out there about meditation, and I want to clear this up. To meditate is simply to sit and breathe and relax and connect within. There is no magic formula or skill or qualification. You dont have to be enlightened, or practise yoga, or read spiritual texts. You just have to have a pair of lungs and a mind. Sit quietly, breathe very deeply 5 times in and out until you feel more relaxed then continue just to breathe and watch your breath as it enters your nose, and fills out your stomach, and back out again when it wants to. Let it happen, just watch yourself breathe and feel the peace in that. Once in this peaceful state of inner connectedness, you can begin to focus your attention on what you would like to bring into your life and feel the swell of pleasure as you imagine how dam good it will be to get it. Keep breathing, keep focussing on the lovely feelings of intention on your dreams, and revel in your amazingness.


 LET IT GO

If you spend every waking minute obsessing over your goals/intentions, then it's likely you won't let yourself be taken down the natural path of how to get it. Once you have done steps 1-3 then you can relax, forget about it and carry on your life knowing that the beautiful and loving nature of the universe has already started helping you out in achieving your goals. You can return to mediate and focus on gratitude and love for the divine forces that make your dreams become reality and relax in the knowledge that 2014 will be a really, really good year!

5 Tips for embracing your Inner Crazy

I don’t do ‘normal’ very well.

I’m not sure how to define normal, but I’d  guess that it would be the polar opposite to madness. Normal is safe. Normal is accepted and sits next to sanity, whereas madness associates with ‘odd’, ‘weird’, or ‘different’.
Marilyn Monroe famously believed that “madness is genius, imperfection is beauty and I’d rather be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” I salute you Miss Monroe, the archetypal feminine goddess, glamorous, desired by all men and envied by all women yet, deep down, beneath it all, a dreamer, a free thinker, a ‘crazy’ just like the rest of us who yearn for so much more than the mundane regularity of life and the expectations that society imposes.
The dictionary states that ‘madness’ can be defined by ‘extremely foolish behaviour’ or ‘a state of frenzied or chaotic activity’…I don’t know about you, but when taking a glance at my life to date, I can safely say a lot of it has probably been spent in either of these states.

We, as members of the human race, are taught from an early age that crazy people should be avoided.

You know the ones that stagger and flail their arms and shout at themselves in the street, the poor souls ravaged by loneliness, alcohol abuse or perhaps they have just given up with partaking in a society that requires us to believe that money and fame is power and that material possessions are more worthy than values and spirituality.
 We are subtly informed via our schools, our parents and the media what is considered to be ‘normal’ and we should, as best as possible, follow these rules and live a safe and happy life within the conforms of their intelligent instruction. We are advised, as young women and men, how to act.
For women we are scolded for acknowledging our naked bodies and insulted for enjoying sex. We are encouraged to look good in order to be desired, but to restrain our sexual desires in order to act like ‘ladies’.
Men are taught to hide their emotions, to see them as weakness. They are encouraged to see success as power and to see power as the ultimate gain, above personal growth and spiritual awareness – sometimes, but not always, this power extends to relationships and this is accepted as the status quo.

Is this not the real madness?

I would almost certainly class this as extremely foolish behavior, to accept and adapt your beautiful, loving, and ultimately free-spirited soul to fit within these expectations…
There is a homeless man who sits a few blocks from where I live — he is there every day in the same spot, come rain or shine, with his small trolley full of belongings, and a few books which he sometimes reads — I pass him every day and say hello — sometimes he is lucid and says hi back, and some days he is lost in the universe within his mind. But always he smiles. His eyes will close and he will sit in the sun and will always be wearing the smile of someone who has accepted their ‘madness’ and this has brought him peace.
I’ve never seen a more peaceful smile.
And every day I see his smile, and see his ragged beard and unwashed hair and clothes, his trolley packed neatly with all his belongings, in his same spot and I think, is madness the problem or is embracing our inner madness, perhaps the answer?

I believe that in this world, sanity is the acceptance of our madness.

My inner madness consists of my impulsive energy, my obsessions with music and the beauty of nature and the wisdom of books. It is my yearning to move, travel, dance, love, laugh, cry and write. I call this madness because this is not what we are encouraged to explore. This is the juxtaposition of normality, or sanity. It’s my colorful crazy, my flailing armed creativity, my smiling inner peace, my madness is my genius.
Jack Kerouac once stated: The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing.
I’m with you Jack. I am drawn to the unexpected and the unusual, I love the odd and the bizarre. If you think you’re weird, I’ll most definitely want to talk to you…all night. We can talk about anything you want…let’s inspire each other and expand our hearts and minds..
My inner crazy feels uncomfortable with the boredom of small talk and commonplace things.

I want to know what makes your heart come alive.

I want to know what drives your desires and makes your soul sing. I want to lie under the stars and imagine other worlds. I can’t understand when you tell me how much you earn or what you want to buy, but I want to listen when you tell me what you want from life and what you want to see and how much you want to give of your crazy self to the world.
I can relate to your delicious insanity and your craving to get naked and shout obscenities as you run into the ocean, under the moon…

#1 It’s okay to not feel like you fit in. I would rather not fit in and dazzle with my crazy  than dim my light  so as not to blind the masses.
#2 It’s okay to feel like sometimes you are going crazy.The world is full of madness; beautiful, unpredictable madness, and this is the essence of your soul crying out to express itself in any way it can. Listen to your crazy. It might be leading you to something wonderful.
Some of the most significant inventors, writers, leaders and all round awesome people were oddball crazy. You can’t change or inspire without that inner firey madness! Think Einstein, Charles Bukowski or Steve Jobs..
#3 It’s okay to sometimes want to withdraw from the crowds and sit with nature, or to be alone. Life can be overwhelming and confusing, especially as a sensitive soul. The peace you will feel in your own space will allow you to access that inner genius, soothe your soul and connect to your higher (crazy) self.
#4 It’s okay to not feel understood. Because you must know that whatever you feel, there are people out there who feel the same. We are united in our weird and wonderful ways, our foolishness and our delightful madness.
#5 It’s okay to go against the grain, to ignore everything you were ever taught and to act from the heart, despite people’s warnings. Some people will warn you out of their own fear, but we all have the freedom to do what we choose.
