Letting Go: How To Surrender to The Flow of Life

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” ~ Lao Tzu
We’re a peculiar species, we humans; we think we know everything, when really, we know nothing.
Unlike other species, who are driven by natural, primal instincts, we like to plot, plan and control our lives to such a degree that if they fail to live up to our imaginary projections (which they are likely to) we are often left in a state of despair.
We pin so much hope on what we think our lives should, or want our lives to look like, that when the inevitable twists and turns steer us off course or pull the carpet from under our feet, it can leave us feeling out of control and in a heap of tears and why me?s.
The truth is, our lives are not destined to go exactly the way we want them to. If everyone lived out their childhood dreams, we’d all be astronauts, or living in castles with Prince Charming. Life can be a bitch sometimes.
We imagined it would all be so easy; we plotted our grand six-figure career, our whirlwind romance, our 2-4 children, a dog, and a happily-ever-after ending. But it doesn’t tend to work out the way the movies would have us believe.
What really happens is, we lose our job, our relationship breaks down, we feel lost, we are let down, we lose a loved one. Life throws us lemons and we have no idea what to do with them, let alone how to make lemonade.
Perhaps a handful of people will actually stick the course and live a life they had always imagined, but for most of us, life can be one confusing and sometimes messy place, where we feel a little bit lost at times and can leave us pondering what it all means.
I lead a fairly unconventional life, with a tendency to live impulsively and from the heart. I am aware that this is not — by any means — a conventional existence (who liked conventional anyway?), but it’s my existence.
It wasn’t what I had planned or imagined, and so far it has been a bumpy old ride, but a ride full of lessons and experiences which have shaped the person I am today. And I wouldn’t take one crazy, sometimes painful, always meaningful, bit of it back.
If you had told the girl at the front of her English Class, who was destined to study History of Art at University and go on to work as a journalist in London, get married and settle down, that one day I would be living on a small Indonesian Island, selling vintage clothes barefoot and swimming with turtles, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.
I’d never have predicted that an impulsive one-way ticket to Australia would lead to me living on an olive farm in the Hunter Valley, building fires and making friends with animals I’d never encountered before. And that, this experience would lead to my decision to become a vegan and an animal rights activist.
You see, Life has a funny way of doing its own thing regardless of whether you a) wanted it to happen or b) imagined in a million years it was going to. We can try and whittle our lives down to produce a bespoke future; we can dream of plans and ideas which we think would be the ‘right’ thing to do, or the ‘best’ thing for us.
But life has a sneaky way of proving that it knows best and that actually we are pretty clueless.
It will therefore seek to prove this to us by regularly plonking us into situations which force us to question everything we thought we knew, while simultaneously teaching us everything we need to learn at that time to help us become the best version of ourselves.
A wise man once said, “The key to happiness is to let each situation be what it is, instead of what you think it should be.” There couldn’t be a more simple or profound way of summing it all up; in order to stay sane, it’s important to remember that Life Just Is and that it carries on regardless of our assumptions, actions or expectations.
We suffer when reality doesn’t match our expectations. When we project what we want to see onto something or someone that already is, we feel bad, angry, or hurt when it doesn’t match up.
But it is our decision to create these expectations, therefore it is also our choice to let go of them and learn to see everything and everyone exactly for what or who they are. By letting go of our preconceptions, we can save ourselves the pain of our own self-deception.
Hindsight is always a beautiful thing, and when we look back, we can often gain some much needed perspective. Events in our lives which seemed to provoke chaos at the time, ended up being our greatest lessons and our most valuable opportunities for change and growth.
If we can preempt that valuable lesson by reminding ourselves in the moment, that life always unfolds the way it does for our best interest, whether we want it to or not, then we can gain a huge sense of peace amidst times of unexpected change.
To Let Go is the most important thing we can do for ourselves in this lifetime. To let go of fears about the future, of preconceived ideas of what our lives will, or should look like further down the line, of the need to control every detail of our lives and the people in them, and to just let things be.
To let go is to liberate ourselves and to find a sense of harmony in the moment, as our lives unfold naturally and spontaneously.
This being said, there is beauty and necessity in dreaming and having goals, without which we might be wandering aimlessly in circles, scratching our heads. But the difference is that dreams and goals are fluid and hold promise, they are open to change and negotiation and they keep our passions alive and our spirits hungry.
We don’t always get exactly what we want, but we always get precisely what we need. Sometimes the two are unrecognizable from each other. We will always encounter the experiences, people and situations which are the very best for the evolution of ourselves and our consciousness. This much is true.
Our hearts have an instinctual knowing for what is best for us, at all times. If we can learn to listen to their whispered truth, we can learn to live in a way which is lead more by our intuition, rather than the imagined logic of the mind. When we face an unexpected situation, we can choose to see it with different eyes, and arm ourselves with a new perspective.
What we gain is the strength that comes from facing pain and moving through it, to find what lies beyond it.
To surrender to the moment and to see it exactly as it is means we can navigate our way through life with more ease, with less stress, less heartache, less feelings of despair or desperation when things appear to go wrong. Because nothing really goes wrong, it just goes a different way to how we thought it should.
There is true freedom and liberation in letting go and accepting life in all its wonderful, unexpected, messy glory, rolling with the punches and finding the hidden lessons amongst it all.
And I promise you this: life will happen, and if you can find your silver-lined cloud in the midst of the storms, it will all be so worth it in the end.

Yogi Bhajan's Mantra for Life and Light

Yes it sounds like airy fairy hippy stuff but I love this mantra because it's so simple, but powerful and holds so much wisdom in those four short lines:

TRAVEL Light - A reminder to simplify our lives and not get too detached to 'things' which hold material worth. To value love, connection and kindness instead and embrace our freedom of spirit.

“It is the preoccupation with possessions, more than anything else that prevents us from living freely and nobly.” ~ Bertrand Russell
LIVE Light - A reminder to live without burdens, to detach from unnecessary energies, situations or beliefs. To nourish our souls with simple, energising, natural foods and move our bodies as much as we can in any way we can.

"Embrace simplicity" ~ Lao Tzu

SPREAD The Light - A reminder to spread love and kindness wherever we can, in any way we can. To nurture our own souls with self love and then radiate that energy out to others. If we can make one persons day with a smile or kind word, it's a day well lived.

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.” ~ Plato

BE The Light - A reminder to practice self love, self compassion and cultivate inner peace. If we work on ourselves, we will inspire others. Our journey's are as much on the inside, than the outside.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world" ~ Ghandi

Tender of Heart and Wild of Spirit

“The bravest are the most tender; the loving are the daring.” ~ Bayard Joseph Taylor
How can we protect our tender hearts, whilst fighting for their freedom? How do we remain soft amongst tall walls and sharp arrows? How do we find the courage to love in a world which tries to keep us small?
It can be disheartening to operate openly and unapologetically, with our hearts on our sleeves, in a world that encourages us to keep barriers up and emotions unavailable.
We are told to suck it up, grow a thick skin and hold our chin up, when all we want to do is let our passions, anxieties, ecstasies, joys and dreams cascade into the world like water tumbling over a waterfall.
For those of us whose complexity of feeling cuts deep like rivers through mountains, I believe that to feel so intensely is, paradoxically, what sets us free. To experience the ecstatic joys and the bitter lows and everything in between is to live from the heart.
To swim in the oceans of our emotions and sensations is to experience all there is to be alive.
Remember that there is so much strength in kindness, courage in connection and bravery in tears; these qualities are the elixir that feeds our wild spirits — the fire that burns brightly in our beating hearts and breathes life into our weary souls.
In order to survive in this world, instead of surrendering to its sharpness, we must stay soft by loving and living, fiercely yet gently. We can’t let others’ swords cut the words from our mouth or extinguish the fires in our heart.
We don’t have to play make-believe or hide behind masks of indifference in order to be seen as strong. We must rise in the warmth of our passions like the phoenix, out of the ashes of discomfort and spread our wild wings in a display of defiance and beauty.
It is the open-hearted, the ones who feel so much, who can heal this world, because they have the strength and courage to heal themselves first.
If we find ourselves in a balancing act between outer strength and inner peace, it is often because we mistake our expressions of emotion for limitations, rather than opportunities for growth. We forget that the fragility of crystal is a fineness, not a weakness.
“I have always appeared to be fragile and delicate but the thing is, I am not fragile and I am not delicate. I am very gentle but I can show you that the gentle also possess a poison. I compare myself to silk. People mistake silk to be weak but a silk handkerchief can protect the wearer from a gunshot.” ~ C Joybell C
Are we not all, really, a little bit in awe of what lies within us? Do we hide away our feelings, not because we’re afraid they make us weak, but because we are afraid of their power? Are we not all alchemists who can transform stone hearts into gold?
If we share the sacred act of feeling openly, by showing others we are capable of, and comfortable with, loving, hurting, grieving, following our passions, breaking and mending, by doing so, we give each other permission to do the same.
Our true freedom, our wildness, lies in our ability to recognize ourselves as perfectly imperfect, wonderfully flawed yet ultimately magic.
It lies in our ability to own our shit, whether that be loving so hard that you think your heart may burst, time and time again, or accepting that you will cry tears of joy or pain, often and unashamedly. Because that’s how you own your emotions.
You aren’t afraid of them, you’re not afraid of your heart and its messy ways, or your ability to recognize your own pain, or your delicious enthusiasm for wanting to make the world better and brighter and more real, somehow. That’s what you bring to the world. And it’s beautiful.
The moment we let go of our fear of being seen for who we really are, in all our glory, we give ourselves permission to step into our strength, and let our hearts open just that little bit more each day.

To me, the most beautiful thing you can own in this world, and the most faithful ally, is an open heart. An open heart allows total freedom and wildness of spirit because it is comfortable with its expression. There is no fear, only love.
And we all know what happens when we are in a state of love; magic happens,  dreams become realized, synchronicities abound, and life unfolds effortlessly.
If the only way out is through, then the real journey of life is one of the soul; to navigate the depths of our deepest longings, desires, pains and fears and listen to their wisdom, to feel them deeply and express them confidently; to not be afraid of where they will lead us because where they will lead us is where we’re destined to be.
It is possible to be both tender and wild, soft and strong, full of passion and full of peace. We simply need to give ourselves permission to be this way — a beautiful mix of yin and yang, of masculine and feminine, of light and dark.
We can weave ourselves between softness and fierceness, remaining kindhearted and gentle, whilst our spirits soar wild and free like birds, finding their way home.

Tender Heart
My tender heart, it feels so much.
It fills and flows and leaps and jumps
It surges and pounds and aches and breaks
It determines decisions that I must make
My tender heart, my precious source
My sweet serenity, my deep remorse
It answers questions not yet asked
A house of truth, it wears no mask.
My tender heart, it beats and bleeds
To satisfy the soul it feeds
It loves so much, I’m sure it’ll burst:
An overflowing cup, to quench infinite thirst.
My tender heart I give you peace
On days when hurt appears not to cease.
I offer you strength, a place of calm
A gentle wisdom, amid the storm.
My tender heart, please speak your truth
Your knowledge from within the ego’s sheath.
I’ll offer you sweetly with trust and grace;
So that I may know eternal solace.

Follow Your Heart, Not The Crowd.

Just because everyone else is doing something a certain way, or living their life a certain way, doesn't make it 'right'.

There really is no such thing as 'normal' or what we are 'supposed' to do with our lives. We each have the opportunity to make our own decisions and to follow our own journeys in this short lifetime, so why waste it living someone else's journey? Someone else's dream?

Society has been formed to create an example of a way of life which is easily accessible and readily available for those who chose it.

But we have choice. We have alternatives. We have freedom.

We don't need to let fear hold us back from exercising our rights to live exactly the way we want to. How many people will look back and have regrets... that they didn't do more, that they didn't see more, that they cared too much about what other people thought, that they didn't fall in love often enough or madly enough, that they focused on things that didn't really matter in the end? Maybe too many..

We don't want to end up living a life that we will regret later on, because we only have one shot at it. Don't wait until it's too late to make a change because if not now, then when?

Our hearts can be our greatest guides, they will tell us when we're not doing what's best and what's best isn't always what you think is right. Sometimes you need to get totally lost and confused before you find yourself again. We'll never truly know what matters to us if we listen to  what matters to everyone else. What is important to one person, may not mean anything to another, and what is junk to one person, is treasure to another.

The only people who are responsible for our choices and actions are us, and we are the only ones who can make those decisions about what we want. where we want to be and who we want to be.

As my next birthday approaches, and I look back on another year passed, I realise that now, more than ever, is the time to be the change I want to see, to listen only to my own heart and mind, not to the fears, ideas and opinions of others and to be honest with myself about what I want.

This is our one precious life and we can spend it living authentically, listening to our own guidance, no matter how rocky the road might become, or how many times we fall. Too often we base our life choices on other peoples, for fear of walking alone, for fear of forging our own way in the world, or failing. But our failings are our biggest lessons, and without them we would never learn to grow, to follow the path best for us and become the best we can be.

So as I consider another year gone by and the beginning of a new chapter in my life, I ask myself; am I being authentic? Am I following my heart? Am I being true to myself?

Because the only person that can follow the wisdom of your own heart, is you... Don't sacrifice your gift to the world for anyone else.

Losing A Shining Star

You don't need to know someone in person for them to bless your life.Robin Williams truly did inspire all of our imaginations and touch our hearts. He became the characters he played in a way very few are able to.. He made us believe in magic, and reminded us that we should never stop dreaming, that we should always keep a sense of child like wonder when looking at the world. He encouraged us not to take ourselves too seriously and that it was OK to be weird and wacky - We could be who ever we wanted to be! .

Sometimes it takes death to remind us we are alive. I think it's amazing to see so much love everywhere for a true shining star.. And I hope that perhaps it will encourage people to reach out to those around them, to see each other as fellow humans without judging with labels or division, and to connect more; to reach out and offer support, or to ask for help.

RIP to a wonderful soul, thank you for everything you taught us  .

"You know what music is? God’s little reminder that there’s something else besides us in this universe; harmonic connection between all living beings, every where, even the stars." Robin Williams

When We Write, We Come Alive

It is often said that when a writer writes, he/she writes from a place far deeper than the limits of the conscious mind.

Somewhere between the realms of the heart and the dwelling of the soul, a magical land nestles on the horizon; Between valleys and mountains, rivers and fields. It exists in our imaginations, but its promise is sweet like the apple of temptation held to our wet lips, crisp and juicy… dangerous. Real.

When we write, we sit and let our hearts reach the page the way rivers reach the ocean.

They rush and run, a steady flow, determined, always knowing where it’s headed but not the route it must take. Nothing can stop its course. In the same way, nothing can stop the words from spilling from inside of us and out into the world.

We draw our words like swords from a place of dreams, desires, nightmares and fears. Truths so raw they threaten to break us open as they burst through the barriers of our physical form. Our souls may bleed a thousand deaths as we dictate its longings onto the page as it settles and sets into a little piece of its own history.

Our mind will leave us and in its place an empty space, void of rationality and sense.. An urgency, a passion that reaches the very depths of our heart and begs to be etched onto the souls of those who read it.

Words are manifestations of ourselves. They are symbolic representations of the many truths and desires  which lurk inside each and every one of us.

They force their way out through hurried pens and scrambled fingers on keys. They pour like liquid gold out from under the places where we’ve kept them buried like hidden treasure. The unanswered questions of our own existence kept like hostages of our souls.

They bleed from our wounds, our hearts, our ink-filled veins.

Stirred from the bottom of our engorged hearts we scrape letters, smudged with tears and sweat and heartache. Signed with blood we write with poisoned ink, our pained revenges and our bittersweet goodbyes to old lovers and friends.

We lie naked and exposed, wrapped in the silken robes of stories told and secrets yet to be revealed. We let our hands gently reach out in the dark for others who understand that our words are our most precious gift. They are to be hidden in hand-carved ivory boxes, wrapped with satin and ribbons and delivered in the dead of the night, to be opened by those who’s hearts beat with the same gentle rhythm as our own.

We savour words as if each succulent morsel was crafted from the finest sugar-spun delicacy, melting on our lips and our minds. Their sweetness lingering and dripping from our souls like drizzled honey.

We caress old books, their spines weak and frayed. We touch them like old lovers, who’s every curve we know like our own. Yet each time we trace our fingers along their worn edges, it feels like the first time, tense with excitement and eager to unfold the promises within.

We swim amongst sentences like drowning men, off long lost ships, swirling and sinking within the rough seas of our minds. We cast nets for feelings and scramble for their meaning , ripping open maps containing long lost lands. And when we can no longer find our way, we rely on the quiet wisdom within and let it guide us, shaking pen in hand, to steer us home.

We find heaven on earth as we sit and breathe life onto blank pages; Our art is our words, our instruments our pens and the medium our hearts.

Write Your Own Path to Happy

You are the sum of your experiences.
So they say.
We are told that we are a part-nurtured, part-natured walking product of everything we’ve been through and everything we believe to be true within and without of ourselves. We are a collection of memories, subconscious influences and belief systems which gradually mold us into the folks we are today.
We are warned that we carry the burden of all the unkind words and unfair judgments that we have ever received, that we harbor all our previous moments of personal anguish, and that we embody all the false hopes and misguided truths which we have learned and which we must un-learn in order to find true happiness.
However…
… are we not, therefore, the product of all of our positive experiences too? Are we not carrying around the satisfaction of every heartfelt compliment and word of encouragement?
Are we not resonating with every kind smile, every yet-to-be-realized dream and every moment of pure joy which linger inside of us, waiting to be recalled and re-lived to remind us of how amazing we really are?
I believe that for every breakdown, there is a breakthrough. For every put-down, there is a great big hoist-up, and for every thunderstorm, there is a rainbow that follows.
In essence, we are strong, we are determined and we are hopeful. At our core, we believe that there is always something to aim for, be that true love, contentment… success… or heaven. We are unified in our common pursuit for more, for better, for what we feel we deserve.
For every insult you endured, I can bet you have received a compliment. For every rejection you survived, you have achieved some form of success, and for every time you forgot how to believe in yourself, you were shocked by the realization that you had more faith than you ever gave yourself credit for. For every time you have been lost… you have also been found.
You always picked yourself up and carried on. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be here now.
We dwell on the times we fell, we lost and we were hurt. We hold on to our wounds like battered reminders of our failings — anti-trophies of our battles and defeats. But what of all the many times we smiled, we won and we saved ourselves, over and over again?
Where are our proud medals of personal success and gold-starred acknowledgements of our sweet victories and triumphs?
We are resilient and strong, and it’s about time we remembered this. We should be laying wreaths at the altars of the beautiful days we have lived.
I choose to let myself be the person I am, and the person I am proud of becoming. I choose to remember the sheer number of times my breath has been stolen by sunsets and sunrises, the oceans and mountains.

I choose to be influenced by the kindness of strangers who have continuously shined out to me like a beacon of hope in the chaos of humanity.

I choose not to be broken by the words which went against me, but instead choose to be strengthened by thepower of those which lifted me up and filled my heart with hope and my soul with joy.
I have decided to be carried by the river of love which runs through me, not by the fickle breeze of judgment and contempt which, at some stage, blows amongst us all.
Our whole lives are based on choice, it is what set us apart from other animals. We all have souls that need to survive but the difference is, we have a choice; we don’t have to just survive, we can live, we can thrive and we can be inspired.
We can choose what to leave behind and what no longer serves us. We have a privilege and, therefore, a right to be able to carry with us only that which benefits us — be it memories, friends, lovers or experiences.
“How we feel about ourselves, the joy we get from living, ultimately depends directly on how the mind filters and interprets everyday experiences. Whether we are happy depends on inner harmony, not on the controls we are able to exert over the great forces of the universe.”

~ Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
Why should we carry the responsibility of the burden of our pasts when we can choose to leave it behind?
Let’s try to take only with us the softness, the warmth and the kindness that each of us has and will continue to experience, and be  more selective with the past we choose to carry; therefore, the life we choose to live.
If I am the sum of my experiences, then I choose to be built out of the multitudes of dreams that reside inside my heart and the many sunny days that I have woken up to.
I choose to be a product of all the magical times that my soul has connected with another’s, and the plethora of smiles I have received from strangers. I choose to be a grand medley of the times I have loved others and been loved myself.
I choose to embody the sum of the parts of me constructed from perseverance, determination and hope, rather than an amalgamation of my memories of fear and shame.
My self-confidence is more reliant on how I choose to see myself, than how others choose to see me.
My self-belief is dependent on the importance I place on my own dreams, not the willingness of others to support them.
The love I have for myself is home-grown and self-appointed and is based  on the gradual collection of experiences in which I have taken growth and strength as an outcome, not self-pity.

We have two options in this short and sweet life of ours: We can blame others for who or where we are today, or we can take responsibility for our own happiness. We are the lead character in the story of our lives… Select the plot you want, drop what you don’t. The rest is fantasy.
It’s true that we are the sum of our experiences… but only those we choose to cherish. Remember the good and forget the rest.
Life’s too short not to.

Have the biggest adventure of your life

I have always been fond of dreaming up quests and escapades.
The mundane does not interest me and I am pulled by the sweet temptation of adventure. So, 12 months ago I bought a one way ticket to Australia, and what followed has been the biggest adventure of my life.
To travel to the other side of the world in search of adventure is not a new concept. When Christopher Columbus embarked on his maiden voyage across the globe, he, like any intrepid explorer, was curious as to what lay over the water and was determined in his quest for new and unchartered lands.
We’re a curious bunch, us humans, and we often become complacent in our admiration of home soil. We grow restless to seek new and exotic landscapes to rekindle our connection with the earth, discover the beauty of the planet and forge our own maiden voyages. We recognise the shared sense of awe and appreciation in discovering unusual lands and their accompanying cultures.
740042_150802708405514_938875956_o
We live on a huge, beautiful, wild, planet – to think we might only see a small fraction of it in our lifetime  seems unimaginable. 6 Continents, 7 billion people, 2 hemispheres, various time zones, tropical rainforests, arid deserts, snow capped mountains, ice-ridden landscapes, ancient tribes and modern mega cities, jungles, great expansive plains containing a great cacophony of life and vast expanses of ocean and coral reefs….
All contribute to this extraordinary ball of rock we call our home.
There is a great attraction in the unfamiliar, a mystery in the unusual; We are drawn to exotic locations, far from home and we are intrigued by the cultures and traditions of the natives which inhabit these foreign territories.
If our native environment is the cosmopolitan industrial city-scape then we may yearn for the soothing rhythm of the ocean, rolling green hills and mountains. If we are born into the heat of equator-bound climes, then perhaps we long for the crisp freshness of a European city in autumn.
Whatever it is we crave, and wherever it is we have a burning desire to venture to, it can be a life changing experience to bite the bullet, buy a ticket and go. To be immersed in the day to day life of a country or city totally alien to your own is enriching and eye opening; You leave behind the safety of the predictability and the comfort of routine and you are thrown into an abyss of the deliciously unaccustomed and unacquainted…
Mark-Twain
Shackles are broken, connections are formed, stereotypes are shattered and your mind is blown open. Often we find ourselves leaving behind old habits and beliefs as the physical distance we travel allows us to separate from that which no longer serves us. The age-old cliché of ‘finding oneself’ is finally realised as you acknowledge yourself in your wholeness, standing alone; Independent from the validation of the familiar.
Typically we are taught, through the media or through social norms, that as a planet we are disconnected and separate from one another, divided by religions, cultures and the colour of our skin. In truth we are united by the pulse of being alive and sharing a common bond; our planet. We all live together on this earth, physically divided by oceans and borders but spiritually connected by the simple fact that we are human and we are brothers and sisters, united in our collective existence.
I believe in the importance of inter-cultural exploration, to understand that despite the miles between us and the attempts to socially  or otherwise separate us, we all breathe the same air, we all appreciate the kindness of strangers and the power of a smile when language barriers silence us. To explore the nuances of a  foreign culture is to better appreciate the dynamic and beautiful elements that make up the mosaic of life which exists on our planet.
There is a whole world out there waiting to be discovered – A rich and diverse tapestry which weaves together the threads of ancient history, eclectic traditions and towns and cities steeped in culture. We owe it to ourselves and to future generations to dip our toes into faraway oceans, to taste and smell the aromas of freedom and adventure and to experience a way of life which is a far cry from our own, if only to walk in the shoes of those who we would otherwise only hear about in stories or read of in books.
So, if you find yourself pulled by the curious call of travel or feel the burning desire within to venture to new lands, don’t hesitate, don’t delay.. pack your bag, open your mind and heart and go..

Own Your Shadow

“The brightest flame casts the darkest shadow.”
~ George RR Martin
In a world that bombards us with numerous ways to ‘find happiness’ whilst simultaneously prescribing and sedating us with antidotes to depression, anxiety and other such modern and mindful problems, we are left in a perpetual state of flux.
We want to be happy, more than anything, and why not? But we are consistently encouraged to chase happiness yet reject and medicate our suffering.
We are encouraged to seek the light yet avoid and ignore the rumbles of heart achethe painful whispers from the depths of our souls.
But what of this darkness that lurks within each one of us? What becomes of that?
Within each one of us lies our inner source, our peace and what I believe to be our highest self; this ‘light within’ holds our wisdom, our capacity to love fully, with vulnerability, our power and our truth. I like to think of it as a beautiful rose, which we nurture and grow so that it blooms and blossoms and the fuller the flower, the closest to our true self we our becoming.
“In Light there is Dark, and in Dark there is Light.” ~ Kami Garcia
But what of our shadows? There can be no light without its counterpart; A Shadow only forms when the sun shines bright.
We hold in each of us the remnants of old wounds from childhood or the aching emergence of adolescence where our hearts and heads are at war with our bodies and we’re peering at the world, blinking and blushing with awkward innocence. We hold in us fears and failures, shame and regret.
For some these shadows lurk silently, emerging only very sporadically, in the heat of a raging argument with a loved one, or perhaps allowed to bubble unwittingly to the surface after too many glasses of wine.
For others they are as present as a heart beat or the blink of an eye. The merkyness lingers and weaves between the everyday exchanges with friends, families, lovers, strangers – it coils itself around the heart and the throat – a persistent reminder of its loitering presence.
In the pursuit of happiness we cover and consume and suffocate these fears in the hope that once the embers are extinguished, our light will shine bright and nirvana will be reached – we grapple and fight with our shadows, our innermost pain, we shove it away and muffle its voice – we deny its very presence in the hope that that it won’t one day engulf us and diminish our chances of contentment.
“Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody.” ~ Mark Twain
But what if we stand up to our shadows and name them out loud, completely and utterly acknowledge them and own them? We must call their existence into being and accept their presence – look deep into their dark eyes and say ‘I know you, you’re real, you’re within me.’
The miraculous thing is that when we acknowledge our darkness it takes away its power. Fear only has power when you resist it, when there is a struggle. The resistance is the power you give your shadow in order for the menacing darkness to become overwhelming.

There is a beautiful release about realising the qualities of your shadow self and showing no judgement, and offering unconditional love and acceptance towards its presence. We cherish our most attractive and positive qualities and the lightness we show the world, but we are encouraged to cover our failings and our innermost depths.
These are the things that make us vulnerable – these are the things that make us real. These qualities that exist from hurt or trauma or grief are what make us whole – they are the shadows to our light, the darkness to our brightness, and they need to be recognised and cherished and nurtured and shown love and compassion and understanding.
Shadows may seem scary when you’re afraid of the dark but in reality they are just by-products of light. Our most powerful transformation takes place after periods of pain or suffering – the brighter we shine, the darker our shadows have been or still are.
We need to own our shadows, show them love and respect and that way they will become subtle trajectories towards our peace.
“The wound is the place where the light enters you.” ~ Rumi
